Carbon Steel

EN 8

EN8 is an unalloyed medium carbon steel grade with reasonable tensile strength. It is normally supplied in cold-drawn or as-rolled conditions. Tensile properties can vary but are usually between 500-800 N/mm². EN8 is widely used for applications that require better properties than mild steel but does not justify the costs of alloy steel. EN8 can be flame or induction hardened to produce a good surface hardness with moderate wear resistance. EN8 is available from stock in the bar and can be cut to your requirements. We also offer flame cut plates cut to your required sizes and normalized. EN8 plates can be supplied surface ground or precision ground.
Applications • Automotive parts • Connecting rods • Studs, bolts • Axles, spindles • General engineering components
Equivalent Grades • BS & DIN European: C40, CK40, C45, CK45 • AISI/ASTM A29:1038, 1040, 1045 • BS 970-1991:080M40 • JIS G4051: S40C, S45C • DIN Werkstoff No.: 1.0511, 1.1186, 1.1189

EN 9

EN9 carbon steel is a medium carbon steel grade commonly supplied in the as-rolled condition. It can be flame or induction hardened to produce a high surface hardness with excellent wear resistance for a carbon steel grade. EN9 bar is available in full lengths or can be cut to your requirements. EN9 carbon round steel bar flame cut steel plates can be supplied cut to your required sizes and normalized. Flame cut plates can be supplied Lumsden ground or precision ground.

C45

C45 grade steel is a medium carbon steel offering moderate tensile strengths. The material is capable of through hardening by quenching and tempering on limited sections but can also be flame or induction hardened to Hrc 55. This grade is most commonly supplied in an untreated or normalised condition and is available in several variations which offer slight modifications of chemical composition. Machinability similar to that of mild steel can be expected, however weldability is reduced.
Applications • Gears • Automotive components • General engineering • Forged connecting rods • Torsion bars
